The Monthly Royal Signals Newsletter

To Unite, Trigger Old Memories, and Record Personal History for Posterity

Welcome to the September 2003 edition of the Royal Signals Newsletter.

Readers can now get this newsletter in two ways, either by collection (Downloading a pdf version for off-line reading/printing) from the newsletter distribution service, and from same they will get regular notification of the availability in same by a brief e-mail, or now thanks to the efforts of Keith Drummond this newsletter has also been made available on-line within the main RSO site. Which also resulted in a major redesign of the RSO site being necessary to accommodate full width representation on all pages, and easier navigation via drop-down menus.

IMPORTANT! The newsletter distribution service (a Yahoo group) has had to be sacrificed for normal discussion use. A new group exclusive for notification of new newsletters and Datasheets has been made, it can be subscribed to under ... Royal Signals Yahoo Group

The on-line version can be found in the RSO site in the newly created Newsletter Archive under… Newsletter Index

We will need your participation submissions and feedback, so please send us your stories, concerns and wishes, and please recommend us to your friends and enemies ;-)

RSO Site News…

New Datasheets added… Three new Datasheets have been added to the RSO site…

Datasheet 901 Vera Margaret Welch and her WW2 Songs

Who the hell is Vera Margaret Lewis (née Welch)? I can almost hear you all saying… Well think of who else you know with this first name, and associated with WW2 songs… then under her stage name VERA LYNN (later Dame Vera Lynn, OBE) was probably Britain's most popular "Wartime" singer, and one name that almost any ex-signaller can associate to regardless of when they served. The datasheet is a short history of Vera's career and the words to her most significant songs.

The Lyrics of the following WW2 favourites…

Hermes (Mercury) Facts, or "About our Jimmy"

Ancient Greek and Roman Myths Notes

Hermes(Latin Mercury), In ancient Greek tradition, the young god Hermes (Jimmy), an eternal youth and often depicted as a young boy, is the giver and interpreter of dreams.

Hermes is the guardian of the journey, and he is often pictured as a psychopomp (guide to souls) who is the god that comes for and then leads people to the Beyond.

In one ancient Persian tradition, it's said that in the Beyond a dying person must first pass over what's called the Chinvat Bridge.

If the dying person is evil, then the bridge is only as wide as a hair. For the good person, such as a young girl or boy - their guardian angel having been with them throughout their lifetime - comes to the dying person for purposes of guiding them safely over the bridge.

(from Henri Corbin "Spiritual Body and Celestial Earth")

Help Needed to find… (Some recent Guestbook entries…)

These are some request for info placed on the RSO guestbook…

Please look in the Guestbooks from time to time and maybe see if you can help someone fill in some blanks in their Family History, etc., etc.

There is a Guestbook for General Use, (but we will allow other ranks and civilians to use it too…) for any and all Royal Signals and WRAC related messages, and another dedicated to the Air Formation Signals and Air Support Signal Units …

Any Input or Contact offers via Brian Streetly Please

Here a compilation of post for the Last 30 days in the Main Signals Guestbook. Guestbook

A Severn 01-09-2003

Father was in the Royal Signals during WWII. I know a bit about where he trained and some more about his service in Egypt and the Middle east campaign. Quite a few photos of him and his mates, especially when he was attached to the RAF for part of the war. Would like to know if more information is available about him. He died several years ago and never easily spoke about his time in the service, would like to know a bit more if possible. (Cyril Severn. Went out from the UK to Durban, South Africa, bound for the Far East. Troops reassigned when the previous ship was caught at Singapore by the Japanese invasion. He ended up in Cairo, Alex, Sidi?, and Ben Gazi.)

Great site here folks. Enjoy everything about it. And while I'm here, does any one know of the whereabouts of Stevie Morgan, he was the lone Brit in the Royal Canadian Signals detachment with the Danes in Xeros (Cyprus) in 76. All of us of course were 644 Signal Troop.

Ian Winterbottom 10-09-2003

Excellent Site, congratulations to you. Recommended to you by Petra (thanks, love) but the first time I've got in properly. Lovely stuff and already found someone I know. Jokes are good! Anyone from 28 Sigs out there, or anyone else who knows where I might find Keith "Moff" Moffatt, from the Glasgow area, or Jimmy Clancy, from Blackburn? I'm currently in Bolton, Lancs. All the best and keep up the good work, Ian

Steve Anthony 11-09-2003

Great site - well done! Anyone remember my name from 13 Sigs, Langeleben, Winchester, Tangmere.... I was at Langeleben just before they bulldozed the site clean, took many pictures and will send them to anyone interested. Retired this year, found a nice location 4,300 feet up the Rocky Mountains, probably the closest I will get to heaven! Steve

John Daly 15-09-2003

I wonder if anyone can help. My father, Michael Joseph Daly,(Now sadly departed) served in the signals during WW2 and I am very interested to find anyone who knew him. Unfortunately I have been left no records, all I know is that he was in the signals, his unit arrived in Normandy about 10 days after D-Day and spent time later in the war in Brussels. He was 21 in 1944 and would have come from East London -Barkingside/Ilford? Very grateful for any info or links.

Gary Lee 22-09-2003

Does anyone know the whereabouts of a Terry Filer. He was in 7 Sigs in 1972 and was the godparents of my daughter. Last heard he was a Sgt at Harrogate.

(Editor's Note; Sadly we have heard Terry has passed on, and informed Gary accordingly)
